Srinagar freezes at -3.7 °C, Kargil records -11°C

Srinagar city shivered last night as the mercury here fell to a low of -3.7 °C, while the minimum temperature in remote Leh and Kargil districts plunged below -10 °C.

The minimum temperature in the city here, which is already reeling under cold weather, was recorded at -3.7 °C, an official of the state Meteorological Department said. It was a departure of two degrees from the normal.

The department in its forecast bulletin said the weather was likely to remain cold and dry in the state for the rest of this week till Saturday.

The towns in remote Ladakh region, which remains cut off from the rest of the state for most of the winters, recorded very low temperatures with Kargil registering a low of -11°C, the official said. Leh, the main town in Ladakh region, recorded a low of -10 °C.

In south Kashmir’s Pahalgam tourist resort, the mercury fell to -5.6 °C, while north Kashmir’s Gulmarg resort recorded a low of -5.2 °C.

The minimum temperature in north Kashmir’s frontier Kupwara town was recorded at -4.4 °C while the gateway town of Qazigund in south Kashmir recorded the minimum of -2.8 °C, the official said. — TNS
