Government Girls Secondary School in Kabrel village of Hisar district has come a long way from last year when it shot to infamy due to the zero result in the Class X examination. This year, the school has got 92.3 per cent result in the Class X examination.

The school has made a drastic turnaround. Only three students from a total of 39 have failed to clear the examination, while 34 students have been declared pass. Moreover, three girl students — Kiran, Harpreet Kaur and Kavita — have got distinction by scoring 410, 401 and 400 marks, respectively. Two students have got a compartment and will have to re-appear in the examination.

The school headmaster, Ramphal Singh, said all this had been possible because of a  three-pronged approach. “We had the support of the government as we have the full staff of nine teachers for the secondary classes. Besides, the students and the teachers worked hard throughout the year,” Ramphal said.

Sarpanch of Kabrel village Dharam Singh said: “It is a huge relief for me and my staff as we have been under tremendous pressure after the last year’s result when all 24 girls failed in the Class X examination. I hope the school is able to keep up the momentum.”

Last year, the students had complained that their studies had suffered due to non-availability of teachers in science, mathematics, Sanskrit and Hindi.

After the issue was highlighted by The Tribune, Hisar MP Dushyant Chautala had raised the matter in the Lok Sabha to expose the poor condition of the government schools in Haryana.

Later, the education department had compiled a list of 20 government schools with zero result.

The state government had also started a teacher training and motivation programme in July last year to improve the quality of education in government schools. The programmes were held by the Teacher Training and Education Institutes.

Additional Deputy Commissioner, Hisar, Amarjit Singh Maan said the District Institute of Education and Training, Hisar, had adopted the Kabrel government school for a year. “The overall efforts of the teachers and students have brought the positive results,” Maan said.
