Ravana’s effigy smashed, thrown in canal

PANIPAT: Miscreants reportedly smashed an effigy of Ravana in Sanjay Colony here on Friday and threw it in a canal.

Panipat, October 19

Miscreants reportedly smashed an effigy of Ravana in Sanjay Colony here on Friday and threw it in a canal.

Furious, colony residents alleged miscreants wanted to disturb peace in the area. The police had to be called in to pacify them. Later, another effigy of Ravana was arranged and burnt.

Ravinder Rathi, an organiser of Dashera celebrations in the colony, said in his police complaint a 50-ft effigy of Ravana was installed around 2 pm on Friday.

“Everything was set for the Dashera celebrations. After finishing the ‘puja’ on Friday, scores of armed youths attacked the Ravana’s effigy. They smashed the effigy with their weapons, loaded it into a tractor-trolley and threw it in the Delhi parallel canal,” he claimed.

BJP leader Surender Rewri, the husband of MLA Rohita Rewri, was among those present during the “puja”. Residents alleged miscreants living in a “dharamshala” in the colony were involved in the incident. — TNS
