Haryana universities have been slipping down over the years, according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development every year.

While Kurukshetra University, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU), Hisar, and Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, are among the top 100 universities this year, previous NIRF rankings show dwindling of rankings.

Kurukshetra University slipped 18 slots to secure 98th rank, HAU slipped 13 slots to secure 63rd rank and MDU slipped 14 slots to get 90th rank.

In 2016, five Haryana universities bagged slots in the top 100, of which Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology (GJUST), Hisar, bagged the 24th rank. This year, it got 100-150 rank band.

Prof Tankeshwar Kumar, Vice Chancellor, GJUST, said, “Parameters were different in 2016 as we had applied in the science category. For the last three years, we are coming in the 100-150 bracket. Our ranking in pharmacy has improved from last year.”

Ranked 44th in 2016, MDU could not make it to the top 100 in 2017. It made a comeback in 2018 with 76th rank. This year, its ranking slipped further.

Prof Rajbir Singh, Vice Chancellor, MDU, said, “More institutions have participated this year compared to last year. We are number one in the state and have got ‘A+’ grade from the NAAC. Ranking has gone down primarily due to perception. Our performance has improved, but we will focus on different aspects of ranking as well.”

The NIT, Kurukshetra, jumped two slots to 41st rank. Management Development Institute, Gurugram, secured 12th slot, same as last year. The IIM, Rohtak, improved its ranking by four positions to bag the 23rd slot.
