Shimla, November 11

In what may come as a major relief for the people of the town, the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) is gearing up to supply water on a daily basis.

The residents had a tough time this summer when they received water supply on the sixth or the seventh day. Currently, water is being supplied on the third day while in some areas the pressure is low.

Water pumping which dwindled to 23-28 MLD during the summer has been increased to 48 MLD. On an average, 45 MLD of water is required for daily supply in all 34 wards.

The SMC claims to have started daily water supply in 12 wards while the remaining are getting on the third day.

Sources said the highest-ever pumping of 52.05 MLD was achieved on September 29 last against the installed capacity of 54 MLD from all schemes. The leakage of 7 MLD was plugged in the Giri pipeline in 2016-17 while a 1-km stretch of the same line was replaced. A tender was awarded to replace a three-km line above Dhamandri. All pumps and motors were overhauled that helped increase pumping from the water source.

The pipeline from Creignano to Dhalli, installed in 1924, had a leakage of 5 MLD and the same was replaced by October-end. A leakage of 2.5 MLD was plugged from Ashwani Khud.

Managing Director, Shimla, Jal Prabandhan Nigam, Dharmendra Gill said at a given time, only three old pumps were working at Gumma which had been replaced with four new ones. These steps helped increase pumping to 52.05 MLD
