Kangra, May 23

Burglars broke into a jewellery shop in the main market of this town last night and decamped with Rs 50,000 and left behind five gas cylinders, a gas cutter and a tool kit before fleeing the scene, the police said here today.

Kangra Subdivisional Police Officer Surinder Sharma said the burglars had entered owner Nigam Bhel’s shop during the previous night by breaking an 18-inch wall from the backside of the shop and were equipped with gas cylinders and a gas cutter. He said the burglars tried to break the safe with the help of the gas cutter but failed to do so because it was fire and gas proof.

He said the burglars decamped with cash, but failed to steal gold from the safe. He said the police were examining the CCTV footage to identify the criminals. He hoped that the criminals would be arrested soon. — OC
