Int’l scientists discuss nanotechnology use

Four globally recognised scientists, including one from the US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), were invited by the University of Jammu (JU) to attend an international conference on ‘Recent advances in interdisciplinary sciences’.

The four scientists namely — Meyya Meyyappan, Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Prof Ravi Silva and Prof Vijay K Arora — were invited by JU Vice Chancellor Manoj K Dhar on January 11 and 12 to create awareness on nanotechnology, besides discussing various applications of this technology at present and its future potential.

Meyya Meyyappan, chief scientist, NASA, gave a detailed presentation on nanoelectronics in Beyond Moore’s Law Era. He said “vacuum is superior to any semiconductor in terms of electron transport, in addition to being immune to all radiations”.

Prof V Ramgopal Rao, director, IIT, Delhi, spoke on the multidisciplinary approach to engineering. He said “India’s contribution to the world’s research and development and intellectual property is steadily increasing. In certain specialised areas such as nanotechnology, India is among the top three countries in the world in terms of research publications and patent filings”. — TNS
