On Thursday, when roads in Srinagar were deserted due to a strike, more than 30 young entrepreneurs, international experts, government officials and Valley-based industrialists met in Srinagar and debated the challenges that business houses face in the Valley.

The event was organised by the J&K Skill Development Mission in collaboration with the Bridge Institute. The programme will continue for three days where deliberations will be held with different stakeholders to come out with a problem-solving approach.

“The aim is to understand the challenges and opportunities in skill development, employment generation, entrepreneurship development, and to strengthen skill-entrepreneurship ecosystem in the state,” said an official.

Despite a shutdown, the young entrepreneurs, some of whom are going through skill development training and others who have already started their business, made it to the event to express their views.

“The problem in Kashmir is the lack of family support. The people here only want their children to have a safe government job and do not encourage them to do business,” said one of the participants. Another entrepreneur, who was unable to qualify civil services, said he started his own business.
