DC unveils list of drug-free Nawanshahr villages

NAWANSHAHR: Setting a benchmark in the anti-drug campaign, Nawanshahr district is leading the state by making its 50 villages drug-free while more villages are in the process to get a drug-free tag.

Setting a benchmark in the anti-drug campaign, Nawanshahr district is leading the state by making its 50 villages drug-free while more villages are in the process to get a drug-free tag. The 50 villages were declared drug-free on Independence Day.

Divulging details while unveiling the first list of drug-free villages of the district, Deputy Commissioner Vinay Bublani said though the formal announcement had been made on Independence Day, there were some documentation work which was yet to be completed. Now, we have cross-checked the documentation as per conditions laid down for a drug-free tag. The conditions laid down for the same include no FIR under the NDPS Act against any resident for the past five years and recovery and sale.

The cross verification goes through three layers, one of administration, second of police and the last of GoGs. After meeting all riders, the villages that qualified for the drug-free tag in the first phase include Sahlon, Salempur, Sultanpur, Chahad Majara, Chak Illahi Baksh, Tajowal, Mehandipur, Mandhala, Shamspur, Chakli Sujaat, Majara Kalan, Jafarpur, Ramgarh, Mai Ditta, Saidpur Theh, Bahadarpur, Gohlro, Mirpur Lakha and Majhur in the Nawanshahr subdivision.

Banga subdivision contains Chak Kalal, Sotran, Jeedowal, Mohalla Muktpura of Ward No. 7, Mohalla Gandhi Nagar of Ward No. 12, Atari, Bharo Majara, Bahdowal, Burj Kandhari, Chak Monder, Munna, Chak Guru, Makusdpur, Taharpur and Lalpur as drug-free villages while Burj Bet, Tej Palana, Sahbazpur, Jitpur, Jhandupur, Kulfr, Ballowal Saunkhari, Mansewal, Khivewal, Bir Kathgarh, Fatehpur, Kuhar, Jeowal, Paniali Khurd, Teehra and Ranewal Tapparian of the Balachaur subdivision.

The Deputy Commissioner said the Nawanshahr subdivision had 19 villages with drug-free tag while Balachaur and Banga have 16 and 15 villages, respectively.

Giving details of the anti-drug campaign being run in the district, the Deputy Commissioner said DAPOs, cluster coordinators, Nasha Roku Nigran Committees and buddy groups would be given more push by providing a refresher course. As per the latest guidelines, district-level master trainers would also be given a refresher course.

In the coming days, efforts would be made to bring the de-addicted youth to gym, playgrounds, social and youth clubs to rehabilitate them completely at the village level.

To boost the morale of key players of the anti-drug campaign, officials (civil and police) and DAPOs would also be recommended to the State Nodal Officer, anti-drug campaign, said the DC, adding that the best performers would be felicitated on Republic Day.
