Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore today felicitated former Indian football captain Gurdev Singh Gill for his contribution to the sport.

The minister presented Gill, who missed the felicitation by PM Narendra Modi at the FIFA U-17 World Cup’s opening ceremony, with a cash award of Rs five lakh along with a shawl and a memento.

Speaking after the ceremony, Gill, now based in Jallandhar, said he is happy with football’s progress as the FIFA U-17 world Cup attracted a lot of attention throughout the nation especially among the youth and school students.

An Arjuna awardee, the 67-year-old Gill had captained the Indian team at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games. Gill played for Rajput High School, village Binjon, in district Hoshiarpur.
