Phagwara, October 16

A seminar was organised to mark World Food Day at MLU DAV College, Phagwara, on Wednesday.

Principal Dr Kiranjeet Randhawa said the day was celebrated every year in honour of founding day of the Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1945. She said the primary motive of the organisation was to tackle global hunger. People around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger worldwide. The theme for 2019 is “Our actions are our future”. The principal said due to globalisation, urbanisation and income growth, eating habits had changed as instead of seasonal fiber and plant-based food, people had shifted to refined starched, sugar, salt processed food.

The principal said due to unhealthy and sedentary lifestyles, obesity was increasing among people. A healthy diet included nutritional needs of people providing sufficient and safe nutritious and diverse food which led to a good and disease-free life, she said. Unhealthy diet was the main risk factor for several non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer etc.
