As the byelection for Dakha is going to be held on October 21, Gujjarwal villagers demand a permanent solution to the problem of a dirty pond and would prefer a candidate who would work at the grassroots level.

A group of villagers alleged that the elected representatives had been ignoring the village’s major issue for the past many years.

“In the previous elections too, a few leaders had taken an oath in front of the village gurdwara and promised to ensure the cleaning of the pond, but nothing was done in reality,” say villagers.

“Waste water is getting collected in the pond. Some villagers have got drainage pipes installed and release sewage from their houses directly into the pond. As the pond stinks badly, it causes trouble for all villagers. Our elected representatives always ignored the cleaning of this pond despite our repeated requests and reminders,” said a senior citizen.

He also demanded that the matter should be probed whether any grant was issued for cleaning the pond in the past years. “If yes, where the amount was spent as pond was not cleaned for a long time. We want to question those leaders who had taken oath to get the pond cleaned, but they never talked about this issue after winning the elections,” he said.

Harnek Singh of Gujjarwal village said, “The dirty pond is posing a serious threat to the health of people. There is a need to find a permanent solution to this problem as we have been suffering for the past many years due to this dirty pond.”

“The government must take required measures to get the waste water treated so that it can be used for various purposes, including agriculture. We want a candidate who pays attention and takes immediate measures to get the issue resolved,” he said.
