Education Minister Om Prakash Soni has constituted a committee to formulate new education policy in the state. The committee chaired by Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor BS Ghumman held a meeting in Mohali on Monday.

While preparing the education policy, the committee will discuss various issues, including equality and uniformity in education, inclusive education, digital education, vocational education and skill development, physical development as well as instilling ethical values in students.

The policy will also lay emphasis on making teaching and training programmes effective and meaningful. Moreover, reforms in exam system can also be expected.

Soni said, “The education policy will be child-centric and teacher friendly. Focus will be more on qualitative education. We completely condemn the guide system. Meritorious teachers and hardworking teachers will be promoted. Reforms will be introduced in examination so that cheating can be curbed. Borders areas will be top most priority and already 75 per cent of 2,400 teachers recruited have been posted in border areas.”

The school management, including the community organisations will also be involved in school’s structural development.

The committee will also review reasons for declining enrollment of students in schools and suggest ways to introduce qualitative education, which will assist students of government schools to gain maximum benefit. The policy will motivate students to pursue higher education.

The committee will also hold their views on role of private schools running in the state.
