Drains encroached; fields turn into Venice

Panicked over extensive damage to paddy due to poor drainage system, farmers have urged the authorities concerned to clean all drains immediately.

Farmers demanded restoration of drains, which were constructed in 1960s to prevent waterlogging and floods but have been encroached by influential farmers who enjoy patronage of political leaders.

Investigations revealed that a majority of drains were either choked with wild grass or had been encroached upon.

Farmers led by the Punjab Kisan Sabha member, Baldev Singh Latala, urged Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to get the drains cleaned on a war footing. They accused the Drainage Department officials of ignoring interests of small and marginal farmers.

Agriculturist lamented that successive governments have failed to get drains rid of encroachments. Elected representatives, including office bearers of civic bodies feel that restoration of encroached drains will help curb incidents of overflowing water bodies, waterlogging and frequent flooding in fields. However, nobody has taken a stern stand on the issue fearing a dent in their vote bank.

The Canal and Drainage Department officials led by junior engineer Akash Deep and Ziledar Jaswinder Singh admitted that a 77-ft wide drain had been ploughed by farmers of Ghungrana, Chhapar and Latala villages.
