Ludhiana scored a facile 10-0 over Faridkot in the boys’ section to begin their campaign on a high note on the opening day of the 12th Senior Punjab State Baseball Championship being organised by the Punjab Baseball Association at Shahi Sports College, Samrala, near here today.

Jatin and Sachin were the architects of Ludhiana’s emphatic victory. Ludhiana’s dominance was so complete that Faridkot boys failed to open their account and surrendered meekly.

Earlier, in the inaugural match of the championship, Moga proved too good for Taran Tarn whom they blanked 6-0 with Sundar and Satinder contributing a brace each.

In the second match, Patiala warded off stiff challenge from Mohali before managing to prevail over 3-2 in which Varinderjit and Kirandeep accounted for one run each for the winning side.

Kapurthala too scripted an easy win against Amritsar (4-0). Gurpreet and Arun scored apiece each to help Kapurthala stitch the issue.

In another match, Jalandhar fought a pitched battle against Ferozepur before wrapping the cliff-hanger 5-4 in which Vinay and Dinesh contributed two runs each.

The match played between Fatehgarh Sahib and Sangrur turned out to be a low-scoring affair in which the former came out triumphant 2-0. Gurpreet excelled for the winners, scoring both runs.

The next match, played between Ropar and Bathinda, too ended in a similar way with the former wrapping it up 2-0 with Suraj and Harpreet accounting for one run each.

The last match of the day was played between Barnala and Muktsar which also turned out to be a nail-biting finish. Baranala, eventually romped home winners by a narrow margin of 1-0 which came through Ajay.

Gurvir Singh Shahi, Managing Director, Shahi Sports College, Samrala, inaugurated the championship. Sixteen teams are taking part in the boys’ section.

Others present on this occasion were Sukhdev Singh and Harbir Singh Gill, secretary and organising president, respectively, of the Punjab Baseball Association.
