Flooded roads portend more trouble

With the civic body and the NHAI having failed to get road gullies and storm water drains cleaned, residents had a tough time commuting on waterlogged roads in the city after the Saturday night rain.

Choked storm water drains along Ferozepur Road and Ludhiana-Delhi Road led to flooding of both highways. These drains choked due to dumping of garbage. The covers on the drains have broken at many points.

Rainwater accumulated near the Aggar Nagar intersection and on service lanes of Ferozepur Road. Workers carrying out work on the elevated road were seen removing accumulated water from the Ferozepur Road. Besides, rainwater also accumulated in the areas near Jalandhar Bypass, Dhandari railway station and other parts on the Ludhiana-Delhi highway.

Parts of Pakhowal Road, Gill Road area and low-lying areas were also waterlogged.

Gaganpreet Singh of BRS Nagar said: “The authorities should ensure cleaning of choked road gullies and storm water drains at the earliest. As the monsoon season is around the corner, the MC should take requisite measures. The NHAI should also pay attention towards the storm water drains.” 

Meanwhile, residents complained of erratic power supply in various parts after the rain last night. Power supply went off around 1 am and was restored around 8 am. Parts of Bindraban Road and Hambran Road were affected.

Superintending Engineer Ravinder Garg said: “We have started a drive to clean the road gullies in the city. We will take necessary steps if water gets accumulated on streets. We will write to the NHAI to ensure cleaning of storm water drains.” 

According to the Met Department, 38-mm rainfall was recorded in Ludhiana during the past 24 hours.
