New Delhi, June 19

Stepping in quickly to squash a purported official circular doing rounds on social media on a proposal to link land records to Aadhaar, the Centre on Monday said it was 'completely fake and mischievous'.

Taking cognisance of the purported letter from the Cabinet Secretariat dated June 15, 2017, complete with a signature of an under secretary, the government said a police complaint had been lodged and the matter was under investigation.

The letter with the subject of “digitisation of land records since 1950” claims that the Centre is planning to bring a law making it mandatory for such linkage, and properties not linked shall be considered for 'appropriate action' under the Benami Transactions (Amended) Act.

'The letter attributed to Cabinet Secretariat on #Aadhaar linking to land records, is completely fake & mischievous. A police complaint has been filed and the matter is being investigated', Frank Norohna, Chief spokesperson of the Central Government, said on Twitter.
