Days after deciding to oust former Director Alok Verma from the CBI, the government on Thursday decided to curtail the tenure of controversial Special Director in the agency, Rakesh Asthana.

Besides Asthana, a 1984-batch Gujarat cadre IPS officer, who will now head the Bureau of Civil Aviation and Security, the tenure of two other officers, Joint Director AK Sharma and DIG MK Sinha, who were also in the midst of the factional feud within the agency, have been curtailed “with immediate effect”.

Sharma, a Gujarat-cadre officer of the 1987 batch, has been made CRPF Additional Director General while Sinha, 2000-batch officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been transferred to police think-tank Bureau of Police Research and Development, sources said.

Meanwhile, Jayant Naiknavare, a 2004-batch Maharashtra cadre officer, who was SP in CBI, has been repatriated to his home cadre upon promotion. — TNS
