Three persons lost their lives following heavy rain in and around Mumbai on Saturday, police and fire officials said.

One Usha Sawant, 40, was electrocuted in suburban Ghatkopar, and her daughter Samidha, 5, suffered injuries, the police said. On Saturday, a disaster management team of the

Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation fished out two bodies from the Khadavli river in Kalyan.

Officials said heavy rain had been reported from Mumbai, parts of Thane, Kalyan and Navi Mumbai since Saturday morning. Officials said the levels of the Ulhas river rose alarmingly this morning before subsiding. Severe water logging disrupted road and rail transport in and around Mumbai, they said. Services on the Central Railway were disrupted while trains were running slow on the Western Railway.

Attendance at offices was thin as people chose to stay indoors today. Western Railways officials said road overbridges between Bandra and Mahim within Mumbai city limits and Vasai on the city’s outskirts had been shut for pedestrian use. “We have detected some faults on the bridges and have shut these as a precautionary measure,” a Western Railway spokesman said.

The authorities will take a call on re-opening the bridges after conducting their structural audit, he added.

Earlier this week, five persons were injured when a road overbridge at the Andheri station in suburban Mumbai crashed on the railway tracks below.

Schools and educational institutions remained shut in Nagpur. The city received 265 mm of rainfall on Friday, causing the state Legislative Assembly to flood and leading to its adjournment.
