New Delhi, June 29

The HRD Ministry today released some inputs for the draft of the New Education Policy (NEP).

The 43-page document includes a preamble and a summary of some inputs and indicates some points which are likely to be included in the final policy.

There will be amendment to the Right to Education Act to enable change in the no-detention policy. The drafting committee recommendation for detaining children upto class 5 level instead of class 8 has been included. The Continuous Comprehensive evaluation and end of term exams can be used to identify weak students. Remedial coaching can be provided at the end of the school day or during holidays by the class teacher or volunteers, the TSR Subramanian panel report had said.

The remedial coaching and alternate schools for deprived and migrating children has also been included in the draft released today.

The suggestions for setting up of an education commission to formulate policy, a specialised cadre of education officers and two levels — higher and lower — of the class 10 board exam in maths and science were also in the panel report. The poor quality of school education due to inadequately trained teachers, teacher vacancies and their accountability and insufficient infrastructure is there in both documents.
