After reports of mephedrone drug being highly abused in Mumbai and other places, the Maharashtra Government urged the Central Government to ban it by bringing it under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis told the state Assembly recently that the drug, popularly known as meow-meow, was sold at many places. A crackdown by the state FDA drove the drug out of chemist shops but it is still sold by peddlers. “We suspended the licence of several chemists after they were found selling mephedrone without a prescription,” an FDA official said.
