Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today faced some embarrassing questions from the media following reports that the Mumbai police were providing protection to a bookie whose premises were raided by the Enforcement Directorate last week.

Fadnavis, who was addressing the media during a BJP party convention in Kolhapur this morning, was asked for his reaction to reports about a police team preventing ED officials from carrying out raids in the premises of alleged bookie Anil Jaisinghani.

Fadnavis, who also holds the home portfolio, told reporters that providing police protection to a bookie was wrong and that he would order a probe into it.

ED officials who raided Jaisinghani’s premises were prevented from entering his residence in the township of Ulhasnagar and when they finally entered, they found papers being burnt and SIM cards of mobile phones being flushed into toilets.

Jaisinghani himself claimed to be ill and was rushed to hospital in the middle of the raid, according to ED sources.
Incidentally, Jaisinghani is also considered close to Congress and NCP leaders. During his tenure as leader of the opposition in the previous UPA government, Fadnavis had raised the issue of police protection being provided to Jaisinghani and other bookies. “The decision to provide anyone with protection is taken by the police department. As Home Minister, I will order an inquiry,” said Fadnavis.
