NEW DELHI: The Central Consumer Protection Council headed by Union Minister for Consumer Affairs Ram Vilas Paswan has decided to arm the common man with quick-testing devices to check adulteration of milk and edible oil and their products, and water.

The Central Consumer Protection Council headed by Union Minister for Consumer Affairs Ram Vilas Paswan has decided to arm the common man with quick-testing devices to check adulteration of milk and edible oil and their products, and water.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs plans to mount a nationwide campaign against adulteration of edibles and other consumable items to jack up the country’s food safety to the international standards, which is way down in the pecking order among countries.

The issue of food standards figured prominently today during the 31st meeting of the council which was presided over by Paswan. Specifically, the discussion points included challenges in combating adulteration, strengthening the enforcement machinery and testing infrastructure.

Building of all stakeholders, consumer advocacy, capacity building of Panchayati Raj Institutions and other rural development functionaries to spread consumer awakening in the rural areas was also discussed.

Giving details of the meeting, Food and Safety Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) head Ashish Bahuguna said, “The devices have been developed by the department.”

The device with to check milk and edible oil been named “Rapid Test Laboratory”. It is an affordable, easy-to-use portable apparatus, with no maintenance cost. The department is faced with a problem with regard the marketing of the device and spreading awareness among the masses about it.

“The department is in touch with firms which can take upon this task,” Bahuguna said.

With regard to water, a quick-testing device is also ready. The village panchyats will be also be involved to popularise it and to make it success.
