New Delhi, December 4

In a much-awaited decision, the Union Cabinet today approved the Personal Data Protection Bill, which proposes a penalty of up to Rs 15 crore and up to three-year jail term for company executives for violating privacy norms.

Information & Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said, “A Bill on personal data protection has been approved, but not much details can be shared as it will be introduced in Parliament soon.”

Sources said the Bill intended to provide broad guidelines on collection, storage and processing of personal data, consent of individuals, penalties and compensation, code of conduct and an enforcement model. This comes amid a controversy involving WhatsApp where the Opposition posed questions to the government if it negotiated any deal or did any business transaction with Israel-based tech firm NSO that developed Pegasus spyware to spy on 1,400 users. — TNS
