Mohali: The government has constituted a committee under Harpratap Singh Ajnala for giving due recognition to Punjabis for their contribution to the freedom movement. Assembly Speaker Rana KP Singh stated this after unfurling Tricolour at Government College here. He said, "The contribution of the Punjabi community to the freedom movement is immense, but martyrs from Punjab never got their due." He said he would take up the matter with the Union Government. Girls tie rakhis to Capt Amarinder 

Jalandhar: Five girls on Thursday tied rakhis to CM Capt Amarinder Singh. The CM wished them a bright and prosperous future. The girls included daughters of two martyred soldiers. Sonia is the daughter of martyr Constable Raj Kumar of the Rakshak Operation in J&K, while Bhawna is the daughter of martyr Lance Naik Kulwinder Singh of the Rakshak Operation. The others were Sulekha, a Gurdaspur farmer's daughter, Muskan, a student of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Nehru Garden and Salempur village farmer's daughter Komalpreet Kaur. TNS

‘Roadways to get 100 new buses’ 

Ropar: Transport Minister Razia Sultana unfurled the National Flag on the Independence Day function held at Nehru Stadium here on Thursday. She took salute from a march past by the contingents of the Punjab Police, Punjab Home Guards, NCC, NCC naval wing and air wing. Interacting with mediapersons, she said the Punjab Roadways would get 100 new buses in its fleet. She met students from J&K studying at Rayat-Bahra Institute who were invited there. TNS

Dalit youth shot at in Phagwara, three arrested 

Phagwara: The police arrested three men, Harjap Singh, his son Gurpreet Singh and his friend Jaspreet Singh, all residents of Chak Hakim village, on charges of injuring a Dalit youth, Aakash Bharti, on August 14. SSAP, Kapurthala, Satinder Singh said the injured was admitted to the Civil Hospital. OC
