Staff, villagers pitch in to give school facelift, students upbeat

Colourful interiors, lush green landscape, well maintained computer and science laboratories, a library with lot of books/journals, a stadium and a clean environment all around the campus are prominent features of Government Senior Secondary School, Bilaspur, Nihalsinghwala subdivision.

The school staff, villagers and NRI philanthropists jointly spent around Rs 40 lakh to upgrade this state-run rural school. No wonder, the school has gained popularity among students in the area.

This school constructed over 8 acres has one of the best football and athletics stadiums in the area spread over 4 acres. Many families from about 20 adjoining villages feel proud to get their wards admitted here for education, sports and other extra-curricular activities.

The 30-room school with strength of over 650 students has an RO water purifier system, a computer room, library housing over 4,000 books, information & communication technology (ICT) laboratory to develop communication skills among the students, besides, physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics laboratories.

Rupinderjit Kaur, school incharge, said the school offer studies in science (medical and non-medical) and arts stream apart from vocational courses. She said their students had been making it to meritorious schools every year.

Avtar Singh Kareer, district smart school motivator, said after modernising this school, local clubs and villagers were now focusing on revamping the village schools with the help of NRIs. He said a mathematics park with wall artwork had already been made in the primary school, which has become the centre of attraction in the area.

District Education Officer (Secondary) Pardeep Sharma said, “Apart from the school staff, villagers and NRIs, the village Youth Services Club and Bilaspur Welfare Club have played a vital role in collecting funds to improve infrastructure in the school.”
