Residents of 25 villages falling under the Radaur Assembly segment of Yamunanagar district today held a mahapanchayat at Jathlana village to oppose the Uttar Pradesh Government’s move to construct an embankment along the Yamuna. They threaten to move high court if the UP government didn’t stop the construction.

Zila Parishad member Shiv Kumar Sandhala, who chaired the mahapanchayat, said the embankment would push the water towards villages in Haryana during monsoons and cause loss to life and property.

He said residents of 34 villages, which would be affected by the embankment, had been running from pillar to post to get the work on embankment stopped but in vain. He alleged that the district administration had done nothing to stop the embankment construction work that had been going on for the past six months.

Sandhala said the mahapanchayat was joined by Radaur MLA Shyam Singh Rana’s son Nepal Singh, who assured the affected people that the issue would be taken up with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for its early resolution. Nearly 200 people from various villages participated in the mahapanchayat.

“There are BJP governments at the Center and in Haryana. If the state government pursues the case with the Centre, it can ask the Central Water Commission to direct the UP Government to halt work on embankment,” said Sandhala.

He said if their problem was not solved soon by the state government, they would be forced to go to the high court against the UP Government.
