Dutee allowed to run in Asian Championships

Sprinter Dutee Chand has been allowed to participate in the Asian Championships in Wuhan, China from June 3-7 after the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) received a communication in this regard from the International Amateur Athletics Association (IAAF).

Sprinter Dutee Chand has been allowed to participate in the Asian Championships in Wuhan, China from June 3-7 after the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) received a communication in this regard from the International Amateur Athletics Association (IAAF). The letter from the IAAF to the AFI has now confirmed that Dutee can take part in the China meet if she qualifies for the prestigious event. However, the interim relief provided by the CAS doesn’t apply to other continental and international meets. Apart from Asian Championships, Dutee can participate in four legs of the Indian Grand Prix Series and the Federation Cup, which will be held prior to the Asian event.

Grandmaster Dronavalli Harika missed out on winning opportunities and bowed out of the World Women’s Chess Championship after losing the 10-minute tiebreaker against Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine in the semifinals here today. Harika missed her chances in the first game of the second set of tie-break games and then was outplayed in the second game to lose 0.5-1.5 in 10-minute chess.

Indian hockey team vice-captain PR Sreejesh said their first opponent in the forthcoming 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup — South Korea — will be a hard nut to crack even if they have had the ascendancy in recent matches against their Asian rivals. India defeated South Korea in the semifinals of the Asian Games. They also overcame the Koreans in the World Cup. But come Sunday, it will be another big challenge for India, Sreejesh admitted.

Haryana invites applications for cash awards
The Haryana Sports and Youth Affairs Department has invited applications from medal winners in national and international sports events along with their achievements between April 1, 2014 and March 31, 2015 for cash awards. The sportspersons can send their applications from April 1 to 30, 2015, to the office of their respective district sports officers. Along with their applications, the sportpersons should send attested copies of their achievements, domicile certificate and other documents required under the Sports Policy. A committee formed by the district sports officer would scrutinise the applications from May 1 to 15. After the scrutiny at the headquarters from May 16 to 31, the final list would be released on June 30.

The Serbian world No.1 will face Alexandr Dolgopolov, a 7-5 6-4 winner over Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, in the fourth round. Fourth-seed Nishikori had even less trouble as he crushed Serbia’s Viktor Troicki 6-2 6-2 in 63 minutes. Raonic also moved into the fourth round after a hard-earned 6-1 5-7 7-6 (3) win over French 31st seed Jeremy Chardy. Spain’s David Ferrer, the sixth seed, got past Czech Lukas Rosol 6-4 7-5.
