Lahiri T-13th after eventful Round 1

FORT WORTH (US):Anirban Lahiri had an eventful second-nine at the Charles Schwab Challenge as he carded a 2-under 68 to be placed tied-13th at the end of the first round here.

Fort Worth (US), May 24

Anirban Lahiri had an eventful second-nine at the Charles Schwab Challenge as he carded a 2-under 68 to be placed tied-13th at the end of the first round here.

Lahiri was four shots behind leader Tony Finau.

Lahiri played in the morning when the conditions were easier compared to those in the afternoon when the wind was blowing at over 30km/hr. Of the 12 players atop the leaderboard, 11 played in the morning. Jordan Spieth and Roger Sloan were tied for second at 5-under, while nine players, including Jason Dufner, were bunched together at fourth at 3-under.

Lahiri found only six of the 14 fairways but hit 12 of the 18 greens and then putted way better than he had in recent weeks. Starting on the 10th, Lahiri found birdies on the 12th, 14th — where he sank a 28-foot putt — and 17th. After the turn, he made bogeys on the first, third and fifth holes but reduced the damage with birdies on the fourth and eighth.

Sharma’s late fightback

Farso (Denmark): Shubhankar Sharma made a brilliant fightback on his second-nine in difficult conditions to make the cut alongside compatriot SSP Chawrasia at the Made in Denmark tournament. Sharma holed five birdies in his last six holes to ensure weekend action. Sharma shot a 1-under 70 to get to even-par and make the cut that fell at 1-over.

Chawrasia shot an even-par 71, which included two birdies and two bogeys in cold and windy conditions. At 1-under, Chawrasia was placed tied-34th, while Sharma was tied-48th. Matthias Schwab carded a bogey-free 66 to lead at 8-under.

Aditi set to miss cut

Williamsburg (US): Aditi Ashok’s search for form continued after she opened with a disappointing 3-over 74 that saw the Indian placed at tied-116th at the Pure Silk Championship. Aditi had one birdie and four bogeys.

Bronte Law shot a 6-under 65, which included a chip-in for an eagle on the par-5 third hole, to share the lead with Anna Nordqvist and Jennifer Song. — PTI
