Malaria and Well-Water.

A CURIOUS situation has arisen in Bombay which has caused doubt in the minds of people about the utility of closing up wells as a preventive of malaria. A systematic campaign has been carried on by the Municipality in closing wells in the city and preventing mosquito-breeding. There are very few wells left uncovered and yet it appears that during the last two months there have been more cases of malaria in the city than even before. The experts who are carrying out the unpopular policy of closing up wells are being asked to explain. It would be interesting to know the extent of protection afforded by closing wells and what other causes of malaria remain to be dealt with.
