Farm unions seek complete waiver of farmers’ loans

BATHINDA: Members of the CPI (Marxist), Punjab Kisan Sabha and Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union demanded complete waiver of farmers’ debt here on Thursday.

Members of the CPI (Marxist), Punjab Kisan Sabha and Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union demanded complete waiver of farmers’ debt here on Thursday.

They gathered at Ambedkar Park to discuss their demands. Besides, the members demanded implementation of the Swaminathan Commission Report and action against those who purchase their produce below the MSP. They said the government should buy their crops.

The farmer bodies also sought Rs5,000 per month pension for farmers who are above 60 years and minimum wages for labours at Rs600.

A farmer leader said on October 20, 2016, the Supreme Court had stressed on the implementation equal work, equal pay, abolition of the practice of hiring labourers through outsourcing and minimum 200 days work for MNREGA workers.

The members also went to submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, but all officials were busy on Thursday. Now, they will submit it on Friday.

Farmer leaders Gurdev Singh Bandi, Gurcharan Singh, Inderjeet Singh, Megh Raj, Ram Chand Bansal and Balkar Singh were present on the occasion. — TNS
