Five held, 100 booked in 24 hrs in Moga

Moga, November 14

The Moga police have arrested five farmers and booked at least 100 others during the past 24 hours under Section 188 of the IPC at various police stations for burning paddy stubble, defying the prohibitory orders issued by the District Magistrate on the directions of the Supreme Court.

Those arrested include Sukhdev Singh, Beant Singh, Iqbal Singh, Pal Singh and Kulwant Singh, all residents of Landeke village. So far, 500 farmers of Moga district had been booked for burning crop residue this month.

Last week, District Magistrate Sandeep Hans asked the authorities concerned of the PPCB to register cases under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, against the erring farmers. However, no response has been received from the PPCB authorities so far. —TNS
