Chandigarh, January 23

Three days after Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore’s surprise visit to the Plaza in Sector 17, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today started challaning people for throwing garbage there.

MC Joint Commissioner Manoj Khatri today issued fresh directions to officials of the Medical Officer Health (MOH) wing in this regard.

A team of the MOH Inspector also issued two challans in the evening at Sector 17. The MC staff had collected their details. One was a shopkeeper and the other a visitor. “If the violators fail to pay Rs 500 fine, then the MC would file a case against them in the court,” an official said.

When contacted, MC Joint Commissioner Manoj Khatri said they would continue penalising the violators.

On January 20, Badnore had paid a surprise visit here to review the progress on the project of giving a uniform look to buildings in Sector 17. After being greeted with garbage strewn all around — in the parking area, pavements and the Plaza— the Administrator had told the officials accompanying him, “I can clean the Plaza if your are unable to do it.”
