A 26-year-old girl, riding an Activa scooter, was mowed down by a Haryana Roadways bus, while another girl, who was riding pillion, was injured after their scooter was hit from the rear by the bus at Tribune Chowk this afternoon.

The police said information was received around 1.25 pm following which a police team reached the spot. However, by then, a trauma vehicle of the Chandigarh Police had rushed both injured to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32. The police team then reached the hospital where they met Gurmakh Kaur (24), who was injured in the accident.

The police said the injured revealed that she was working with a life insurance company in Sector 34. Gurmakh, along with her colleague Anita Barwa, left office for Zirakpur. On reaching Tribune Chowk, their scooter was hit by a Haryana Roadways bus from the rear.

The police said Anita fell on the road and was moved down by the bus. She was declared brought dead at the hospital. The victim was wearing a helmet at the time of accident. She hailed from Assam and was residing in Sector 29, Chandigarh.

Fearing they could be thrashed after the accident, the driver and conductor of the bus escaped from the spot, leaving the bus behind.

A case under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC has been registered against the bus driver at the Sector 31 police station. The bus has been impounded by the police.
