Two months after accused Harjasneet Singh Chahal, owner of a music company and a resident of Bathinda, surrendered in the court in the August 2017 hit-and-run case, the police have filed a challan. A 75-year-old man, Subodh Kumar Gupta, was killed after being hit by Chahal’s SUV in Sector 10 here. He has been charged under Sections 279 and 304-II of the IPC. Chahal was initially booked under Section 304-A (causing death due to negligence). However, a month later he was booked under Section 304-II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC. Chahal was arrested and released on bail two days after the incident. However, after section 304-II was added in September 2017, his bail was rejected and he was said to be absconding since then.
The UT police in January had also announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on Chahal. However, on March 22, Chahal surrendered after the Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail.
