Pay full wages to labourers, orders Mohali Deputy Commissioner

To provide relief to migrant labourers, who have been rendered jobless in view of the curfew restrictions, the district administration has directed all the employers to make payment of wages on the due date without any deduction for the lockdown period.

Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan, in an order issued this evening, said be it in the industry, shops or commercial establishments, the employers shall make payment of wages of their workers on the due date. He said the payments are to made without any deduction for the period their establishments are under closure during the lockdown.

The orders further reads that the workers, including the migrants who are living in rented accommodation, the landlords of those properties shall not demand payment of rent for a period of one month. If any landlord is found forcing labourers and students to vacate their premises, they will be liable for action under the Disaster Management Act.

He said lockdown has been implemented to contain Covid spread but a large number of migrants are trying to reach their home towns. Any such movement by them is a violation of the lockdown measures. To deal with the situation and for effective implementation of the lockdown measures and to mitigate the economic hardship of the migrant workers the aforesaid orders have been issued.

Besides, additional measures are being taken like ensuring adequate arrangements of temporary shelters and provision of food to the poor and needy people, including migrant labourers, stranded due to lockdown measures in their respective areas.
