Chandigarh, July 10

A local court sentenced a 52-year-old man to three years of imprisonment for assaulting his female tenant with an intention to disrobe her.

Manjit Singh, a resident of Sector 37, was found guilty under Sections 354-B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and the 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and was also directed to pay Rs 2,000 as fine. He was initially booked under Sections 323 and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC at the Section 39 police station.

The victim was 36 when the incident took place (August 14, 2013). She complained that a case was already on in the courts regarding a property dispute between her and Manjeet.

On the fateful day, she was alone at her place when Manjeet, his father Ram Chander and Paramjeet Singh came drunk. Manjeet told her that he had won the case in the court and that she should vacate the house. As she resisted, the three started hitting her and also tried to tear her clothes.

In the meantime, her husband reached there and called up the police. However, the accused fled the spot.

The police registered a case against the trio. However, the challan in the case was presented only against Manjeet as the police did not find the role of others in the incident.
