The police have roped in students of various schools and colleges in Ambala district to educate vehicle drivers about traffic rules.
SP Mohit Handa is himself visiting schools and colleges in the district to sensitise youths about traffic rules. He exhorts them to not only follow traffic rules themselves but also spread the word around.
The police are also organising various types of competitions among students to make them understand the importance of traffic rules and the need to follow these.
One such quiz competition was held at SD Vidya School in Ambala Cantonment. The SP interacted with young students and gave them a lecture on the do’s and don’ts to be kept in mind while driving a vehicle. He told them traffic rule violations could claim precious lives of both offenders and other people driving, walking or passing by.
Handa asked school principal Neelinderjit Kaur Sandhu to introduce a daily period to educate the students about traffic rules and also sensitise their parents during the parent-teacher meetings held at short intervals.
The principal urged the students to keep an eye on traffic rule violators when they travel on roads and urge the offenders not to repeat the offence by telling them about the dangers involved. The SP and the school principal jointly felicitated the students who excelled in the quiz competition.
Besides visiting educational institutions, the SP and other district police officials are also venturing out in the field and spending time at busy intersections across the district to check the working of the traffic police and act tough against traffic rule violators.
“Our focus is on spreading awareness and sensitising drivers against traffic rule violations. At the same time, we are also undertaking a drive to challan drivers for rule violations and hundreds of violators are being issued challans on a daily basis,” says Handa. He hopes that the participation of students will go a long way in curbing traffic rule violations. He warns drivers that repeat offenders will be dealt with sternly.
