Kurukshetra, March 1
The three-day fifth edition of the International Gita Mahotsav (IGM) began in Colombo in Sri Lanka on Friday.
Partner country of IGM-23
Sri Lanka was the partner country during the IGM-23 held in Kurukshetra last year and the cultural minister of Sri Lanka had expressed the desire of observing the celebrations on the lines of those held in Kurukshetra
The event is being jointly organised by the Kurukshetra Development Board and the Sri Lankan government.
On day one of the festival, a crafts bazar and book fair were inaugurated, while school-level competitions, a cultural show and a musical show were also organised.
A team of officials comprising chief executive officer of the Kurukshetra Development Board (KDB) Dr Vaishali Sharma, honorary secretary of the board Upender Singhal, and the chairman of the 48-kos Tirtha Monitoring Committee Madan Mohan Chhabra have reached Sri Lanka. A delegation of nearly 100 persons led by Swami Gyananand has also reached Sri Lanka to attend the festival.
Madan Mohan Chhabra said, “The crafts bazar and school-level competition started on Friday, a seminar will be organised on Saturday while a shobha yatra will be taken out on Sunday. Nearly 2,000 students are participating in the competitions. The crafts bazar and the book fair will remain open for three days. The bazar has been set up to provide exposure to craftspersons of Sri Lanka. It is a matter of pride for us that the government of Sri Lanka is organising the event on the lines of celebrations held by the Kurukshetra Development Board during the IGM in Kurukshetra.”
“It is a three-day festival, but due to Sunday, on March 3, an event, which was earlier planned to be held in the Parliament of Sri Lanka on the concluding day, will be organised on Monday. A copy of Srimad Bhagavad Gita will be presented in the Parliament,” he added.
