With the aim of having Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled revenue record maps of the district, a team of the Survey of India (SoI) has started mapping the land record with the help of a drone. As per the authorities, Karnal has been chosen for a pilot project. If all goes as per plan, all districts will be mapped.

As a pilot project, the SoI is preparing details online and GIS-enabled revenue maps of a few villages and urban areas of Karnal as a technology demonstrator. The technology will involve drone camera and the drone will be operated by experts of the SoI, said Aditya Dahiya, Deputy Commissioner.

The SoI had sent a team to Karnal, which started work in the district. Initially, the team members were mapping three villages, Sirsi, Hemda and Shahpur. Later, mapping of other villages and Karnal city would be done, he said. The result would be out in a week after pictures were generated, he said.

The results would not be available to the public for some time. The results would be available with the Director General, Land Record, Haryana, who would take the decision with the government to expand the project to the entire district and then to the entire state, he said.

“Mapping is a positive step and totally in favour of the public. I urge the public to cooperate with the team members for mapping,” the DC asserted.

It would ease physical verification of land record at a click of a button and help in future planning to cope with flood-like situations, said Rajbir Dhiman, District Revenue Officer.

The drone would capture the whole area from a height of around 50 metres so that each object was visible easily. The details of non-revenue record land (lal dora) and agricultural land would be covered under this mapping, he added.

Employees of the Revenue Department and those concerned with panchayati raj institutions like patwari, chowkidar, sarpanch, panch and others would assist in mapping, he said. Employees of the NIC, Karnal, would help the team in compilation of data and send the information to the Dehradun centre, he said.
