Aiming to deal with the reluctance of women complainants in approaching male cops, the Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered setting up of 200 women help desks in state police stations under the Nirbhaya project. In Gurugram, such desks have been set up in 24 police stations in the first phase and these will be made functional tomorrow.

The police commissioners of Faridabad and Panchkula have been asked to follow suit and Rs 2 crore has been allotted for the project.

Commissioner of Police (CP) KK Rao said Gurugram police stations already had women help desks comprising a woman cop at a separate table each, but now a dedicated team with a separate room was being deployed.

Astha Modi, DCP, Headquarters, said the move would make police stations more women-friendly. It would increase the confidence of women visiting police stations, she added.
