Dharamsala, September 29

The Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) has created a botanical garden on its land at Jadrangal here. Vice-Chancellor Kuldeep Chand Agnihotri inaugurated it today. The garden is named after Swami Satyanand Stokes (Samuel Evans Stokes), who is credited with introducing apple cultivation in the state in 1916.

Agnihotri said Samuel Evans Stokes was born in America. In 1904, at the age of 22, he came to India to propagate Christianity but, influenced by Hinduism, he became a Hindu. He then came to be known as Swami Satyanand Stokes.

He was the first American to join the freedom struggle of India. — TNS
