J-K reports 80 new coronavirus cases, one death

Jammu and Kashmir reported 80 new coronavirus cases and one death on Saturday, officials said---developments that take the union territory's COVID-19 infection count to 1,569 with 21 deaths.

Fifty-nine of Saturday's count came from Kashmir and 21 from Jammu. 

A 55-year-old COVID-19 patient died in Srinagar’s Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS). Doctors said the woman from Anantnag district had tested positive for COVID-19 and was being treated for chest infection before her death.

Of the 21 killed in the pandemic, two were from Jammu and the rest from Kashmir. 

Eight people from Ramban were among Jammu's 21 new infections. Six were close contacts of previously diagnosed cases. Two people had recently travelled to Kashmir.

All eight were under institutional quarantine.  

In Kashmir, a senior health official and a pregnant woman were among  the 59 who tested positive.

Official sources said the health official, who is from north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, tested positive at the microbiology laboratory of Chest Disease (CD) hospital in Srinagar. 

“A health official presently posted in Bandipora has tested positive for coronavirus. She is resident of Habbak Dargah in Srinagar,” a health official said. 

Of the state's 1569 cases, 84 per cent is from Kashmir.

The union territory has 774 active cases--- 609 in Kashmir and 165 in Jammu, officials said. --- With agencies
