Sunny Hindustani

How did you prepare for the auditions?

I’m not from a wealthy background. To support my family, I had to do menial jobs. I used to practise whenever I had time. I watched every episode of Indian Idol, and I used the judges’ advice from previous seasons to improve my voice.

How nervous were you at the time of the auditions?

I was quite apprehensive. My heart was pounding furiously. But as my performance started, I managed to get over my anxiety. My family joined me digitally, supporting me as well. I continued and gave it my all.

Did you have a feeling that you would get selected?

Since my performance was met with a standing ovation, I was hoping for a positive outcome. I was overjoyed to see the judges enjoying my song. It was like a dream come true.

From auditions to Mumbai, then to the stage, what was the journey like?

The journey has been nothing short of a lesson. I gained new knowledge at every stage. The contestant, the judges, and everyone else were all incredibly encouraging and helpful. I had a blast competing in Season 11 of Indian Idol. I always made an effort to differentiate each episode by adding variety to my singing.

How did Indian Idol change your life?

Indian Idol is the sole reason for my success. I had so many doors opened to me after the win. I’ve done it all, from performing in London to signing records deals in Bollywood.

One thing that you achieved because of Indian Idol?

A small boy from a small town, who made a living by polishing shoes, and who has become a well-known name throughout the world, thanks to Indian Idol. People recognise me and show me their love everywhere I go. It’s all because of the show.

Chandigarh auditions will begin on July 26. Do you have any message for the participants?

Participants should always aim to be original and add their own flair to the music they play. It demonstrates how inventive one can be with the most basic of things. Believe in your effort and diligent practice.
