Ludhiana, April 23

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) organised a programme to promote book culture among the youth. Sardara Singh Johal, a prominent economist, was the chief guest. Ravinder Singh Bhatthal, president of Punjab Sahit Akademi, and Gurbhajan Singh Gill, former president, were also present.

Johal said there was a need to promote book culture among the new generation. He said books and playgrounds could play a significant role in eliminating the menace of drugs.

“There is dire need to construct playgrounds and libraries in rural areas, where the youth can spend their free time. The panchayats shall come forward to construct such facilities in their villages,” said Johal.

Gurbhajan Singh Gill expressed displeasure over approach of the state government towards promoting libraries. Gill said despite recommendations by prominent writers and various organisations, no government had made efforts to construct libraries and promote book culture among people. He said it was unfortunate that the new generation had been losing interest in books.

The authors also pledged to make efforts to promote book culture. Ravinder Singh Bhatthal and Tirlochan Lochi, a famous Punjabi poet, recited their poems on books. — TNS
