Ludhiana, September 19

Two days after a man buried his 40-year-old wife in a graveyard at Muslim Colony, the police, in the presence of a duty magistrate, today exhumed the body as her brother suspected that she was murdered by her husband. The deceased has been identified as Saraja Khatoon (40).

Assistant Commissioner of Police (East) Davinder Chaudhary said Saraja, along with her husband and five children, lived at Guru Nanak Nagar, near the local Central Jail, in rented accommodation. On September 16, she died under mysterious circumstances.

According to the landlord, her husband told him that his wife died after she fell over and suffered a fatal head injury. He also said his wife had been suffering from some ailment for a long time.

The ACP said after burying his wife, the man, along with his children, went to UP to perform Saraja’s last rites. When her family was informed about her death, they suspected some foul play.

Saraja’s kin also had arguments with her husband as he had not informed them about her death. Yesterday, the deceased’s brother approached the police and alleged that her sister was murdered by her husband.

‘We then approached the Deputy Commissioner and apprised him about the matter. The DC gave permission and a duty magistrate was today deployed at the graveyard under whose presence, the body was exhumed. It has been sent to Civil Hospital where a board of doctors will conduct a post-mortem examination. If any indication of murder comes up in the autopsy report, then the police will question her husband,” said Chaudhary.
