Ludhiana, March 16
Fifty-six students were among Ludhiana’s 286 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, district officials said on Tuesday.
Ludhiana, a district that was among Punjab’s hardest hit in the first wave of COVID-19, has been showing a worrying uptick in cases since the last fortnight. The district also reported 10 new deaths on Tuesday.
Forty-nine of the 56 students who tested positive were form Government Senior Secondary School at Bhundri village. Five of the new cases were teachers, and three healthcare workers, health officials said.
Forty-one other people were from outside the district, as were four of Tuesday’s 10 deaths.
The district’s infection numbers rose to 33,959, including 4,655 from other districts. Ludhiana’s death toll now stands at 1,593, including 533 from other places.
Active cases have risen to 1,302.
