Gurkirpal Singh Gill was elected president of the District Bar Association (DBA) in the annual election held here today. Getting 1,232 ballots, he defeated his nearest rival Ankur Ghaiby a margin of 419 votes. Ghai got 813 votes, while the third contender Harjot Singh Harikay bagged 209 votes.
Advocates, including Harish Rai Dhanda, member, Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana; Kamaljit Sharma, Balbir Virk, Bharat Bhushan Sharama, Harkesh Sharma, Arun Kanwal and Varinder Sharma Bobby congratulated Gill on his victory.
The chairman of the election committee, Jagmohan Singh Warrich, returning officer Amardeep Bhatia and assisstant returning officer Lalita Jain said that 2,348 voters out 3,111 exercised their right of franchise. The elections were peaceful amid the tight security arrangements by the police. A special entry for senior lawyers was arranged from the library gate. The voting commenced from 9 am and lasted till 5 pm.
In the triangular contest, Gagandeep Singh Saini was elected for the post of secretary. He defeated his nearest rival Gurmukh Singh by a margin of above 150 votes. Saini got 1,078 votes, whereas Gurmukh Singh got 779 votes and the third candidate Sukhwinder Bhatia got 391 votes. His supporters Nitin Kapila, Karan Singh, Chander Kalia, Gurpreet Saini, Ishwar Ahuja, Amandeep Pabla congratulated him.
Davinder Singh Grewal was elected joint secretary. He defeated his rival by a margin of 1,107 votes. Grewal got 1,648 votes and Sachin Bawa got 541 votes.
Voters care little for Covid precautions
Voters ignored Covid-19 norms as a large number of lawyers met each other after the election. They forgot to maintain social distancing. Although they were wearing masks, they took to frequent hand shaking. Several lawyers were seen hugging each other. After noon, voters were standing in queues close to each other.
