Political rallies keep traffic police on toes in district

Political rallies by the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress at Khanna and Samrala on consecutive days kept the administration on toes owing to frequent traffic snarls on highways and link roads connecting venues of rallies with localities of this region in Malerkotla and Ludhiana districts.

The Ludhiana-Malerkotla, Ahmedgarh-Raikot, Jagera-Payal, Raikot-Dehlon, Dehlon-Sahnewal, Kup-Maloudh, Malerkotla-Jaure Pul, and Ahmedgarh-Sandaur roads were among the roads which were hit by frequent traffic snarls over the weekend.

The withdrawal of public transport from regular routes owing to hiring of buses by organisers of the rallies further compounded the problem as commuters were forced to use their own vehicles due to the shortfall in public transport.

Local leaders and office-bearers of various wings of the AAP and Congress also preferred to travel by their own vehicles, not the buses hired by the parties.

Though the administration had issued alerts and suggested alternative routes to minimise congestion on the roads to Khanna and Samrala, the residents seemed to have ignored them. Consequently, Ahmedgarh DSP Davinder Singh Sandhu, Gill DSP Guriqbal Singh and Raikot DSP Rachhpal Singh Dhindsa were seen making last-minute arrangements to get the jams cleared at the affected points in their respective areas.
