Six get 12-year jail for smuggling drugs

The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Arun Aggarwal has convicted six persons on the charge of smuggling narcotics. They were ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 12 years each. A fine of Rs 1 lakh each was also imposed upon all the convicts.

Those sentenced, include Pavittar Singh of Paramjit Colony, Mundian Khurd, Ludhiana; Karam Singh of Satyana village, Koom Kalan, Ludhiana; Davinder Singh of Begowal village, Doraha; Darshan Singh and Ram Lal of Mahauli village, Sangrur; and Parmanand of UP.

Delivering the verdict, the court held that the prosecution had successfully proved the guilt of the accused beyond any doubt. The court also declined the plea of leniency raised by the convicts.

Divulging details, additional public prosecutor Puneet Jaggi apprised that a case against the accused was registered at the Sahnewal police station on March 3, 2016.

Inspector (Counter Intelligence) Jaswinder Singh, who was present near Kohara Chowk, said he received secret information that the accused were selling of poppy-husk on a large scale. The police came to know that the accused were unloading poppy husk from a truck at the godown of Pavittar Singh, situated at the Sahnewal raod, Kohara.

Following tip-off, a police party conducted raid and apprehended the accused red-handed while unloading poppy husk. As many as 47 bags of containing 1,645 kg poppy-husk were recovered from the possession of accused. However, the accused pleaded innocence during trial. After appreciating the evidence on record, the court found them guilty.
